Spring-cleaning is never an easy task.
You'll have to get under those carpets, behind curtains, and around your dog's sofa bed. It's that time of the year again – and you need to be sure that your home is spick-and-span for you, your family, and your beloved pooch. A clean dwelling can help prevent common pet allergies and sickness within the household. But with so many things to do and so little time, where do you begin?
Here's a quick run-down to help you get started!
- Ensure that your vacuum has major suction power. Its main objective is to pick up hairs, debris, and dirt. Models with upright canisters are best for the job. Carefully go over carpets, wooden floors, and under beds. Mini-vacuums are great for hard to reach corners.
- Use damp rubber gloves to easily remove pet hairs. Put it on, wet it a bit, then sweep over furniture or drapes. The hairs would naturally ball up; making them easier to take out. Wash and dry gloves after each use.
- Don't forget your pet's bed. Wash the base (if applicable) and covers in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid using fabric softeners or fragrances. Separate this from other laundry as well. Add a cup of baking soda to neutralize odors. Dry with pet-safe dryer sheets to reduce static. Finish by line-drying under natural sunlight.
- Be sure to wash your pet's plush toys, blankets, pillow covers, and mats too. For hard toys, use a mixture of water and vinegar. Carefully clean them with a sponge or brush.
- Spring is the best time for a warm bath for your pups! This removes dead skin cells, while keeping him fresh all day. Use soap/detergent-free shampoos. Towel dry before applying anti-flea remedies. If you're not up for a bath, take him to the groomers instead.
- Ensure that your home is urine-free. Otherwise, your dog might smell small traces of it and do his business inside your house. Prevent this by thoroughly drying any wet area. Rinse the soiled spot with soap and water; followed by a a pet-safe odor neutralizer.
- Don't forget to wash a soiled collar! Soak it in warm water with a few drops of dog shampoo. Let it soak for 15-30 minutes, then rub it against itself to get rid of dirt and debris. Rinse under running water. Squeeze out excess water with a towel before hanging out to dry. As much as possible, don't use brushes as it might damage the collar's material.
- Stow away any chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers out of your pet's reach. You can also organize your cute pet accessories using baskets, shelves, and mini drawers. Create a place for all your dog's needs like his shampoo, flea and tick solutions, powders, and brushes.
- Maintain your yard or garden for your pet. Double-check for any toxic plants or weeds that might already be growing. Azaleas, daffodils, mushrooms, lilies, and hyacinths are poisonous for pets – so watch out!
- Remember to do a house check for any holes, cracks, or screen tears. Curious dogs are known to unknowingly escape during Spring and Summer months because of these openings. Cover or board them up to ensure safety.
Spring-cleaning doesn't have to be such a chore with your cute pooch around! Don't forget to throw him a treat or two if he behaves as you vacuum.
